Chapter 14:

Two Souls
“Múscail, mo grá.”
Buffy inhaled the night air.
“I’m awake, Angel.” She rubbed her hands across his as he held her swollen belly gently.
“If only you were, mo milis.”
/Are you now or ever were..\
The thought swept through her mind once again.
/Am I what?\
“Angel?” She heard the fear in her voice.
“Am I awake?”
She turned in his arms and suddenly her swollen belly vanished
and she lay flush against him in the grass.
She heard swooshing sounds that; at first she took it to be waves, but now
she wasn’t so sure she wanted to know what it was.
“AH LOVE! Why didn’t you tell me?”
She couldn’t see him.
She heard him, felt his hand on her hair
and his heartbeat under her hand…
Heartbeat?
“Angel, forgive me.”
“If only you would have said something sooner.
What the hell were you waiting on?
/She realized that it was rheotrical\
To collapse, to die somewhere, a place no one
could find you, Gods Buffy!”
He continued as if she hadn’t said anything,
as if she weren’t there.
She swiftly sat up only to find herself in the dark.

“HELP ME ANGEL! Where are you?”

He was upset with her.
The more he sat at her side and watched her,
listened to her breathing-the more upset he became.
Kate had come and offered to sit with Buffy
but Angel couldn’t let anyone besides Spike
do that for him.
Instead he sketched some clothing ideas for Buffy and handed over
money for Kate to go shopping for him, for Buffy.
He asked that she get a weeks worth of whatever a woman would need…
“I have money of my own, Angel….
He put his hand up, a signal to halt her.
“Buffy doesn’t like owing anyone.” He reached back and rubbed at his neck nervously.
“She doesn’t like to owe me either but it’s a gift that I can give her.”
He smiled kindly and Kate said
“I’m sure paying her medical bills would be gift enough.” She schooled her
features so that they wouldn’t give anything away.
He just smirked, shrugged his shoulders palms flipping up and spoke
“You don’t know Buffy. Hell, I apparently don’t know her much anymore.
I owe her a few. I don’t want to be in her debt anymore. She might leave after she gets well.”
He turned his back on Kate and looked out the window.
Kate grabbed up the money and the sketches.
“Get a shower while she sleeps, you reek!”
With that last shot, she was out the door contemplating
Angels last words

Kate did not see it or would not see it that way.
Lorne, Spike, Illyria have told Kate a few different stories about Buffy.
In particular, Angel and Buffy.
The way she saw it, Buffy wouldn’t be leaving anytime soon.
Especially since Angel is literally a “heartbeat” away.
She laughed at her self and parked her car outside some ritzy clothing store.
Top of the line, fashionable and comfortable…sounded like the things for Buffy.
Kate thought about herself while she shopped.
She was fairly content now.
Her life was different , definitely and she wouldn’t change it now
not even for the world.
Nina, Gwen and oddly enough Illyria have become companions to Kate.
Her life was oddly satisfying as a “demon defender”.
It was a new life and she wouldn’t complain.
Her cell phone buzzed in her pocket and her thoughts were interrupted.
“Hello?”
“Spike..wha..? Ok! Ok alright, calm down..”
